Spinal Decompression

MOST ASKED QUESTIONS

1.  What is spinal decompression?

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical treatment to help in the management of serious low back pain with or without leg pain, or neck pain with or without arm pain.

It can relieve pain associated with bulging or herniated discs, degenerative discs, facet (joint) syndrome, sciatica and headaches.

A decompression machine gently distracts the spine, reducing pressure on sensitive tissues and promotes blood and fluid flow into the disc to bring about a faster natural healing.

2.  Is Decompression different than regular traction?

The computerization of a Decompression machine is the key to a more effective treatment than with regular traction.  Decompression works with varying the pull throughout your treatment, eliminating muscle guarding that occurs with regular traction.  This then leads to a greater decompression (lowering of the pressure) within the disc thus causing an increased blood and fluid flow into the disc leading to faster healing.

3.  How does a lowered disc pressure help heal an injured disc?

Some research has shown that decompression can lower the disc pressure into the negative numbers thus creating a vacuum.  Protruding or herniated material can then be pulled back into the disc, removing pressure on the nerves and speeding healing.  Discs normally have a poor blood supply.  Decompression pulls more blood (therefore more nutrients and oxygen) into the discs and allows the cells to work more effectively in the healing process.

4.  Are there any studies documenting the effectiveness of this kind of treatment?

Absolutely.  Let's look at a few:

  • A study by the Department of Neurosurgery and Radiology, Rio Grande Regional Hospital and Health Sciences Center, University of Texas of Texas published in the Journal of Neurosurgery (vol. 81, Sept. 1994) showed the pressure within the disc was reduced up to -100 mm Hg, creating a vacuum within the disc.

  • In Another study of 219 patients with herniated discs and degenerative disc disease; 86% who completed decompression therapy showed immediate improvement and resolution of their symptoms; 92% improved overall; 5 patients (2 percent) relapsed within 90 days of treatment. ("Spinal Decompression". Nov/Dec 2003, Vol. 5, No. 6, Thomas Gionis, M.D. and Eric Groteke, D.C., Orthopedic Technology Review).

  • "Vertebral axial decompression therapy for pain associated with herniated or degenerated discs or facet syndrome: An Outcome Study" in Neurological Research, April 1998. This study showed that pain, activity and mobility scores all improved after therapy. The researchers showed a success rate of 72% for those with multiple herniated discs and 73% for a single herniated disc. The authors concluded that for patients with low back pain, decompression therapy should be considered as a front line treatment.

5.  What conditions will Decompression treat?

This treatment can help those with:  1) Pain in the neck or low back due to bulged or herniated discs  2) Recurrent pain following a failed neck or back surgery that's more than 6 months old  3) Pain due to degenerated discs  4) Low back pain with or without leg pain  5) neck pain with or without arm pain

Those who are not candidates for Decompression fall under these headings:  1) Pregnancy  2) prior neck or low back fusion surgeries with screws, metal plates or cages. (but ok if fusion was done with bone).  3) Severe osteoporosis  4) Unstable spondylolisthesis  5) Recent spinal compression fracture  6) Severe obesity  7) Severe nerve damage  8) Cancer.

6.  What are the treatments like?

The treatments are quite gentle.  In our clinic you're first placed on a table to heat, massage and relax your muscles.  Following that, you're placed on the D.T.S. Decompression table (usually lying on your back with a pillow under your knees).  A belt-strap is wrapped around your pelvis.  This belt is connected to a part of the machine that gently distracts your spine with varying amounts of pull (many patients actually fall asleep during the treatment).  Following that, we place you on ice packs and electrical stimulation to further decrease swelling in the painful area.  Next, we use very light spinal adjustments if needed.  Finally, we add cold laser which stimulates your cells to create more energy and add further healing (you won't feel anything with the laser treatment).  So, each day's treatment lasts about 50-60 minutes.

7.  How many treatments are needed and what's the cost?

Though it may take fewer treatments for you, most people need approximately 20-25 treatments.

Although other clinics may charge from $250 to $500 per treatment, our charges are only $60 per treatment.  All Decompression machines do the same thing, but we just feel it necessary to keep our quality high and our prices low so that more people can afford to get the care they need.

8.  If all Decompression machines do the same thing, why should I come to you?

First, you can get treatment wherever you want.  The most important thing is that you get treatment.  But here are a few things to consider:

  • If experience is important to you, we have been treating patients with Decompression nearly 8 years longer than any other clinic in the area.

  • To give you more convenient treatment opportunities, we're open 5 ½ days each week.

  • We use "cold laser" a.k.a. "low level light laser" as an additional part of your treatment. This technologically advanced approach will help get you well faster through cellular energy stimulation.

  • We keep your costs low while giving you a high quality of care. At approximately $60 per treatment, you don't have to put yourself in a financial burden in order to get out of pain. Your insurance may even pay a part of your care.

  • Once your pain is decreased, we teach you proper exercises (one-on-one) that will strengthen your neck and/or low back, thus supporting the healing and protect you from future injury.

  • We have three doctors in our clinic and can therefore give you more time for your questions and your care (see link "About Our Doctors").

9.  What can I do to get started?

First, if you have additional questions, we provide you with a free consultation-just call and tell us to schedule you for a free consultation.

However, if you know you're ready to get out of your pain, call us for an appointment as a new decompression patient.

We're open Monday through Friday, and on Saturday morning-

TESTIMONIALS

Being told surgery was imminent, to relieve constant back pain, I started looking for alternative pain relief.  Epidurals were effective for several years then they became ineffective.  I then tried decompression and laser treatments, 2 free treatments.  The complete treatment was $5000 up front.  Being a retiree it was more than I chose to commit to at that time.

I found the Health and Wellness Clinic, the same treatment, for a price I could afford.  I started in June and by mid July I was pain free.  The complete service offered by this clinic and the home exercise program they started me on have given me back the lifestyle I used to enjoy.

Thanks to all the kind professional people at the Health and Wellness Clinic.

I had a lower back injury from a boating accident.  My doctor told me it would just take time to heal.  After four months of debilitating pain, I came to the Health and Wellness Clinic in Layton, UT.  After a few treatments of spinal decompression I am now completely pain free.  What a relief!

-         Tammie Kartchner,  Farmington, UT

I have been coming to the Health and Wellness Clinic for about 3 years.  I first tried the regular chiropractic treatment but got little relief for pain in my lower back.  The decompression treatments have been really great in reducing the sharp pains I got in my back.  The price for treatments has been very reasonable.

I work on airplanes and was having real problems walking from hanger to hanger while having to deal with real pain in my lower back and legs.  It got to the point that something had to be done.

I made an appointment with the Health and Wellness Clinic.  The treatment program was a total success.  No pain and no need for pills to take the pain away.

-         Gary Olsen,  Layton, UT

I was diagnosed with DJD and Stenosis of the lumbar spine, and wanted to avoid invasive procedures.  I opted for DTS (spinal decompression) treatment at the Health and Wellness Clinic.  The ongoing, once monthly, treatment has all but eliminated the paresthesia in my right leg.
